Guest speaker at MVQG Nancy Brown

Last week, we had a guest speaker for our quilt guild was Nancy Brown. She lives in Oakland, CA. Nancy makes pictorial quilts with animals by hand applique and hand quilting. I volunteered to host guest speaker for the quilt guild. She loves animals so stayed with my husband and our 2 pets Maddie(golden retriever) and Sassy(the cat). I picked her up at the airport on Tues afternoon. I knew what she looked like because I saw her on The Quilt Show with Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson. We had dinner at our house that night with homemade lasagna, home grown green beans, salad, garlic bread and margarita lime pie. Wed is the guild meeting at 9:30am and 6:00pm. She had several quilts to show and was able to put some up on the quilt display stands. Her lecture was super amazing and very fun. Several quilters told her after her lecture that love it and that she could be a stand up comedian. Everyone loved the lecture and her quilts. I helped her set up and assist with selling patterns and note cards. She enjoyed our meeting with the business of our Quilt show coming up in April and our money situation. She loved the Show and Tell. After the morning meeting, we went back home to see if my husband wanted to go to lunch with us(he decided not to go). We went to our favorite Mexican restaurant at about 1:30 and then to my local quilt shop Grandma's Attic. We had a 2 hour rest time before we left for the evening meeting. We didn't get home until 9:00 and had a piece on pie. We didn't go to bed until 10:45. Thurs, was the Dog and Cat Workshop from 9-3:30. There were about 20 quilters in the class to learn about applique and how to do your pets quilt. I was out of my comfort zone because I don't know anything about applique. I meet a quilter Jean that had never applique so we learned together with the help of Nancy. You only had a 1/2hr for lunch so most of us went to McDonalds next door. I enjoyed the class and learned how to applique. I got the base of the cat done which was my goal. She said you wouldn't get the cat or dog done by the end of class anyway. The class ended at 3:30 with clean up and out by 4:00. Another member was taking her back to the airport so I said my goodbye. It was a wonderful experience to meet her and to hear and see about her beautiful quilts. My husband, Wayne got to see her quilts and was amazed with them. Maddie and Sassy loved having her as our guest. More about Nancy on my next post.
